c. 1887 Kiowa Brother & Sister, by Lenny & Sawyers, Purcell, Ind. Terr., 1887. Pencil inscription, verso: "Son and daughter of Kiowa warrior Big Tree (Ah-do-ette)." Albumen cabinet card.

The caption appears to be inaccurate, as Big Tree is known to have had two daughters, but no sons. This young man is well dressed, with fully-beaded moccasins, leather leggings, clean white shirt, black-wool vest and a silk scarf. Silver ball & cone earrings fringe the cartilage of his ears. A colorful, striped, Mexican blanket is wrapped around his waist. His sister wears a classic, Kiowa leather dress, the top trimmed with elk's teeth and a bead-edged panel of red wool at the neck. The scalloped hem would be painted vermillion, above the skirt fringe.

Kiowa Sisters, by Lenny & Sawyers, Purcell, Ind. Terr, 1887. No inscription. Albumen cabinet card.

The seated girl, identified on a print in another collection as Louella Brace, wears a blue wool dress trimmed at the top with elk's teeth. The neck panel and perhaps the side gussets would be contrasting red cloth. The leather dress of her sister Agnes is trimmed with cowrie shells, in imitation of the more scarce elk's teeth. Probably the garment was painted yellow ocher. Both wear leather boot-moccasins, the pair at the left trimmed with nickel-silver conchos.
