    INTER-TRIBAL GATHERING
    c. 1900 Inter-tribal Gathering, Santee Reservation, Nebraska, c. 1900. Photographer unknown. Silver-gelatin print with identifications added in ink, recto.

The individuals are identified by number as follows: (1) Col. Toney, I.D. [Indian Department] Scout; (2) Sam Howley, Santee; (3) David Whale, Santee; (4) Chief Swift Bear, Spotted Tail [i.e., Rosebud Reservation, S.D.]; (5) Dr. W.S. Smysor, Winsor [sic], Ill.; (6) Chief White Shirt, Ponca; (7) Nice Voice Eagle, Rosebud; (8) Rev. W.W. Hamm, R.I. [Rock Island?], Ill.; (9) Chief Stone Arrow, Ponca; (10) Capt. B.J. Young, Chief of I.D. Police, Santee.

The Ponca and Santee reservations were closely located in Northern Nebraska; the Rosebud Reservation is about 80 miles further west across the Missouri River in southern South Dakota. This occasion appears to have been a summer Grass Dance hosted by the Santee, indicated by the presence of the Santee police captain. Note the buffalo-skin tipi in the left background.

The Brule Lakota Swift Bear (Mato Luzahan) shown here was likely a son of the prominent chief of the same name and ally of Chief Spotted Tail during the 1860s & 1870s. His distinctive headdress of striped feathers loosely clustered over the cap identifies him as a member of the Miwatani warrior society. Usually, Miwatani headdresses were made with the striped feathers of great-horned owls. This one appears to be made entirely with wing and tail feathers of rough-legged hawks. The headdress of his fellow Brule, Nice Voice Eagle (Wanbli Ho Waste), more commonly translated Good Voiced Eagle, is of similar construction and may also indicate Miwatani membership, although the clustered tail feathers are those of the Merriam turkey.
