    Description

IMPORTANT EARLY VIEW OF SIOUX GIRLS ARRIVING AT CARLISLE INDIAN INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL
    c. 1879

albumen image on original mount by J. N. Choate, of young Sioux girls most in traditional dress, upon their arrival at Carlisle. What is likely the school mistress stands at left. One of Spotted Tail's elder daughters, and the wife of Charles Tackett, is standing far right. She and her husband had accompanied the Brule students to Pennsylvania and remained as chaperones. Choate logo scratched in the negative and period ink script ID on verso, likely in Choate's hand, "Sioux girls as they arrived at Carlisle School Oct. 5, 1879/ J. N. Choate Photographer." A later version of this image exists on cards pre-printed with Choate's logo, however, this is clearly the first printing and rarest of form of this image.

    Dimensions: image, 4 ¾ x 8 inches; mount, 5 ¼ x 8 ½ inches
