c. 1882

Hand-colored, deluxe print, with pasted label, verso, of David F. Barry, Bismarck, D.T.
In the initial attack by the 7th U.S. Cavalry at Little Bighorn in 1876, a diversionary force led by Major Marcus Reno killed all three of Gall's wives and two daughters, who had been picking berries along the river and were trapped during the assault. In grief and rage Gall, who weighed a muscular 300 pounds, led a counter charge which crossed the river and overran Custer's advance position at Calhoun Hill, leading to the swift collapse of the entire force and massacre at Last Stand Hill. Indian participants remembered the final battle lasted "less time than needed for a man to smoke a pipe." Later, during the 1880s at Standing Rock Reservation, N.D., Gall was a leading chief and a Justice of the Tribal Court. He died at the age of fifty-four, Dec. 5, 1894, which ironically would have been George Armstrong Custer's fifty-fifth birthday.
