Enclosed in a folio, inscribed in part, On the recommendation of Gens. Crook and Sheridan, Cummings was awarded a special citation for his actions against the Sioux at the battle of Crow Creek during the Deadwood Expedition of 1877.

The estate of Dr. Valentine McGillycuddy, (1849 - 1939), a surgeon who served with expeditions and United States military forces in the West.
