Description

A KIOWA BOOK OF LEDGER DRAWINGS
    c. 1878 - 1880
19th century ledger book with 29 pages of paintings and drawings by Kiowa artists, principally Koba, c. 1878-1880, and Etahdleuh Doanmoe, c. 1878-1885.

    Page
29 Drawing in graphite, red and yellow pencil, probably by Etahdleuh, portraying the
Thunderbird within an arc of lightning. This is copied from a Yanktonai Sioux
muslin painting then in the Carlisle Indian School collection. See Figure 3.
37 Drawing in graphite, red, yellow, green, blue, purple & brown colored pencil,
probably by Koba, depicting a beaded strike-a-lite bag and a painted parfleche.
39 Graphite and watercolor by Koba, depicting a classic, beaded Kiowa
strike-a-lite bag, between two diamond motifs.
45 Watercolor by Koba of the profile head of an Indian man; transfer paint on p. 44.
59 Watercolor by Koba showing himself chasing a buffalo. Transfer paint on p. 58.
Compare the shield design with the shields shown on pp. 63 & 87. Compare this
horse especially with Koba's horse figures in the NAA Collection, MS 36C.
63 Graphite and watercolor by Koba, nostalgic scene of his home with painted tipi,
drying meat, a cooking pot suspended over a fire, the same war shield depicted on
    p. 59, here displayed on a tripod with an otter-wrapped crooked lance, together
with a White man and a wagon.
79 Watercolor, probably by Etahdleuh, copied from a mystical, horned figure painted
on a rawhide, Yanktonai Sioux drum in the Carlisle Indian School collection. See
    Figure 4. Transfer paint on p. 78.
81 Graphite and watercolor, probably by Koba, showing six peyote buttons. This may
be the earliest depiction in Kiowa art of this hallucinogenic cactus.
87 Black colored pencil and watercolor by Koba showing a painted Kiowa tipi, and
what is probably the same war shield as on pp. 59 & 63, here in its outer cover.
The shield is suspended on a tree behind the lodge. A covered wagon with the
sheet removed is portrayed at upper right.
91 Graphite and watercolor, probably by Koba, of geometric designs, a shield, beaded
blanket strip and perhaps the earliest depiction of a "half-moon" fireplace as used
in ceremonies of the Native American Church.
99 Graphite and watercolor, probably by Koba, of a Kiowa shirt painted yellow with
red fringe and a red, 4-point star on the neck piece.
105 Graphite and watercolor by Koba of a running, yellow horse and two bushes.
    Transfer paint on P. 104.
107 Watercolor by Koba of a buffalo bull.
109 Graphite studies by Etahdleuh of two horse heads, forelegs, and the neck and
mane of a horse. Compare these horse heads with p. 115; and the compositions
showing horses which are signed by Etahdleuh in the NAA and Beinecke Library
    collections.
111 Graphite drawing showing the front elevation of a Greek Revivalist building,
possibly the Mess Hall at Carlisle Indian School. Artist unknown, but probably
Koba. Compare the photograph showing buildings on the Carlisle Indian School
campus, at Flickr.com (search "Dickinson College.")
113 Drawing in graphite, red and blue colored pencil showing the heads of two Indian
    women. Artist unknown.
115 Graphite and watercolor, yellow horse by Etahdleuh. Compare the many horses
in compositions signed by Etahdleuh in the NAA and Beinecke Library
    collections.
117 Graphite and watercolor by Koba of a Kiowa beaded, board-frame cradle, his
cadet's uniform, a dead tree and a view of the Kiowa sacred peak, Rainy
    Mountain.
121 Graphite and watercolor by Koba showing a stockade fort with reversed
American flag, rifle, knife and war shield.
123 Graphite and watercolor by Koba showing the forequarters of an elk stag and
    three bushes.
125 Graphite and watercolor by Koba. At left, a copy of the 1869 Will Soule photo
of the Kiowa chief Stumbling Bear---compare Figure 6. At right, the design of a
Kiowa war shield with red-wool-cloth drape and eagle feathers.
127 Graphite drawing of a leather belt decorated with brass upholstery tacks,
    probably by Koba.
129 Graphite and watercolor by Koba, depicting a classic, beaded Kiowa
strike-a-lite bag, between two hour-glass motifs.
133 Graphite and watercolor by Koba, showing the forequarters of a horse; and a
stylized figure of the inflamed, spotted body of a Kiowa man, representing the
glyph for "smallpox year" in the tribal calendars.
135 Graphite drawing, probably by Koba, of the full, standing figure of a Kiowa man
wearing an eagle-feather headdress with buffalo horns on the cap.
145 Graphite and watercolor sketch of a train, probably by Koba. Note the tiny
portraits of the engineer, and Indian passengers pressed to the windows.
171 Watercolor by Koba of a dark-green Kiowa war shield with two eagle feathers.
173 Watercolor by Koba of a Kiowa war shield with design of a charging buffalo.
175 Watercolor by Koba of a Kiowa war shield with abstract geometric design.
