Description"WAR DANCE" AT STANDING ROCK AGENCY, D.T.
Imperial card with imprint of "Barry, Bismarck and Standing Rock, D.T." Title is printed at bottom of image. The flag displayed at upper right suggests this may be a Fourth of July celebration. The man holding the circular war shield at left center, and another second from right wearing a white fur turban, both carry bent willow sticks called "crooked lances," emblematic of membership in the Badger (Ihoka) Warrior Society. Before going into battle these would be wrapped with strips of otter fur and hung at intervals with paired eagle feathers. The man at far right displays an enemy scalp on another stick. The original glass plate for this image is in the Denver Public Library Collection, Neg. No. B-786.
