Imperial card, lacking a maker's imprint, but known to be the work of D.F. Barry. This may be a unique view, not otherwise known. It is slightly different than Denver Public Library's Neg. No. B-745. Other variants are B-744a, B-744b & B-746. An engraving after one view in this series appeared in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in November, 1886. The Standing Rock Reservation did not yet exist at the time of the 1880 national census. By 1885, in order to accurately provide adequate supplies, it was imperative that a proper headcount be made on various of the western reservations. Congress authorized the work in the 1885 session, and it was carried out the following year. In the left foreground wearing a homburg hat, Agent James McLaughlin sits at the left-hand table. Chief Gall, wearing a long coat and white hat, leans on the right-hand table. The collector, Chief Clerk Bird Robinson, sits with crossed legs in the chair opposite Gall.
