c. 1905 "Standing Bear," by Carl Moon, c. 1905. Title appears stenciled on rear frame, together with "A.T. & S.F. Ry" (Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway). Moon did contract photography for the Fred Harvey Company. Silver-gelatin print in original, pressed-wood frame.

This man's tribal identity is unclear. He is neither of the Lakota men named Standing Bear; nor the Ponca Head Chief of that name. Most of Moon's models were either Northern Pueblo, often from Taos; or Jicarilla Apache. He wears an eagle-feather headdress with distinctive, Cheyenne beaded brow band; and a beaded, leather shirt of either Mandan or Hidatsa origin, from the Fort Berthold Reservation, N.D. These undoubtedly were studio props, which appear in other portraits by Moon.
