    Description

    "BLACK TEETH'S DAUGHTER"
    c. 1872 "Black Teeth's Daughter," Brule Lakota, by William R. Cross, then at Niobrara, Nebraska, c. 1872. Title appears as ink inscription below image. The back-card advertises "Stereoscopic views and Card Pictures from New Spotted Tail Agency." Albumen CDV.

This beautiful child with tightly-braided hair is dressed in all the loving finery her family could provide. The wool trade cloth dress, probably dark blue, is accented with expensive elk's teeth on the yoke and brass hawk bells at the hem. Note the gingham under garment. The moccasins and leggings are heavily beaded. A choker necklace and paired pendants in each ear are made of dentalium shells imported from the Pacific coast. For this portrait she has been posed in her father's breastplate of bone hairpipes. Close inspection reveals that her forehead and large circles on her cheeks were painted, doubtless with vermillion.

    Dimensions: image 2 ¼ x 3 ¾ inches
