Description

Maya Jadeite Pendant of a King
    Maya, Lowlands
    C. 200-600 AD
    Jadeite
    1¾" Tall x 1½" Wide

The pendant is carved from a pale selection of green and whitish jadeite and depicts a standing king. His large face has coffee bean eyes, grooves for cheeks, a rectangular nose, large square earflares on his sides, and the head framed with a plumed headdress. He stands on thick legs, a lappet at the center, and his arms bent with hands on chest, each hand with the ceremonial 'C' shape where the thumbs are on top, fingers below, and designating him as a lord. The pendant is in excellent condition, with strong polish, and, as an interesting characteristic, the back has a long 'V' cut groove that would coincide with the exact center of the front image. Possibly, the pendant had been considered to be split in half and given to two royal family members.
