The poster/photograph accompanying this lot was taken by Christian Barthelmess in 1889 in a camp just west of Fort Keough, Montana, on the Yellowstone River. Pictured on the far left is Stump Horn, one of the Cheyenne scouts who served with Lt. Edward Casey, 22nd Infantry, U.S. Army. Note: The photographer L. A. Huffman purchased the negatives of Christian Barthelmess in 1906. This same image has been reprinted with the copyright of L. A. Huffman. See: Peterson, Larry, L. A. Huffman, Photographer of the American West, Settlers West Galleries, Tuscon, p. 138.

    Condition Report*:

Overall, the condition of the cradleboard is very good. There is usual wear and light soiling. The extensive beadwork appears to be intact. The wood slats have abraded paint in small areas. A sliver of wood 2 inches by 1/3 inch is missing from the rear of the left slat. There are approximately 2 small holes on the front of the right slat. One bell is missing from the fringe along the sides. Another bell is broken leaving half of the bell still tied on. The cloth lashed to the wood slats and used as backing for the beaded cradle is moderately stained and soiled. There is a one-inch tear in the fabric along the top right side. The wood slats have been added. The accompanying photo is mounted on foam board which has numerous dings on all four edges. The image shows the cradleboard clearly.
