"Central Plains dresses were made from two complete skins folded over to place the animal's hind quarters and tail in the center of the yoke. During the solid beadwork period, dress construction changed to include a third skin which omitted the tail from the yoke. The undulating beadwork border imitates the old lines formed by the hindquarters and the U-shaped tab symbolizes the tail. Sioux myths interpret this U-shape design as a turtle emerging from a lake; the turtle is regarded as a protective power which ensures good health," Porsche, Audrey, Yuto'keca: Transitions, The Burdick Collection, State Historical Society of North Dakota, 1987, p. 41.

    Condition Report*:

In overall excellent condition.  Hide supple with approx. six very small holes, approx. two native repairs and light soiling.  Beadwork with minor loss. Fringe with area, approx. 3 inches in length, tearing away from dress.  No apparent restoration.
