Description

A Sioux Beaded Hide Cape
c. 1900

hide, small glass and brass beads, dyed porcupine quills, cotton and polyester cloth, sinew

Provenance:
Julia Jordan, Oglala full-blood of Chief Red Cloud's band (1857 - 1913), made this cape for her daughter Mary Julia. Jordan was the wife of Charles P. Jordan, Indian agent and co-owner with J. A. Anderson of the Jordan Mercantile Company on the Rosebud Reservation. Her exceptional beadwork was worn in Indian shows and displayed at expositions in Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and Cincinnati. This lot and lots 70191 and 70192 were passed down through the family by descent. For more information visit HA.com.

Length: 23 ½ inches, excluding fringe

More Information: In overall excellent condition. Supple hide - approx. three areas slightly stiffer than the rest (water damage?) One small tear with native (?) repair on the proper right shoulder. Very minor bead loss. Minor quill loss. Re-lined with red polyester cloth, straight-stitched over the red cotton lining - well preserved as a result. The new lining could be easily removed. No apparent restoration.
