    Aida Maggie Icho (Wahnomkot)

It is extremely rare for history to have preserved the name of a basketmaker with her creations from the first quarter of the 20th century. Luckily, early collectors in Bakersfield, CA documented these magnificent Yokuts baskets as having been made by Aida Maggie Icho, known as Wahnomkot in her native language.

Wahnomkot is memorialized affectionately by Frank F. Latta in his 1949 publication, Handbook of Yokuts Indians. Latta notes that Wahnomkot was from a prominent family and married the last Head Man (chief) of the Wukchumne Yokuts. She lived until 1964, producing beautiful baskets, not the least of them, these large polychrome vessels.

Original, extant tags along with a corroborating Bakersfield ledger indicate the smaller, lidded basket in this lot was number 95 and had a price tag $25.00. The larger food bowl bears a tag with the number 281 in the base and is listed in the ledger as "Crowfoot $75.00" bought in 1926.

    Diameters: 13 ¼ and 23 ¼ inches
