    Termite in Amber
    Hymenaea protera
    Dominican Republic

It only makes sense that termites, so known for "attacking" wood, might from time to time end up as the inclusion in an Amber specimen. It may seem ironic (or maybe even poetic) that an insect associated with devouring wood is now captured in resin from a tree for eternity. Here a Termite is the centerpiece in an ancient diorama where the amplitheater is a large polished piece of dark, reddish Domincan Amber, with some unpolished portions showing the natural exterior. The larger wings of the Termite are the most obvious "feature" in this mortal scene, but there are certainly other things going on in this mass of fossilized tree resin. This piece looks like the kind that one could imagine being able to extract DNA from, then try to clone some ancient creature a la the "Jurassic Park" storyline. This is a large specimen that literally beckons to be picked up, held, and examined.
    Overall Measurements: 3.0 x 2.0 x 1.1 inches (7.6 x 5.1 x 2.8 cm)
