    Fly in Amber
    Hymenaea protera
    Dominican Republic

There seems to be a resurgence in the popularity of Amber since the latest installment of the "Jurassic Park" series has now hit the big screen. Amber is fossilized tree resin (not sap) and often has inclusions of plant and animal material. Insects have often been entombed in Amber, and pieces with such inclusions are very highly sought after by collectors. While not a terribly uncommon fossil to come across, a quality specimen of clear Amber containing well preserved and highly detailed creatures is not so easy to find. This example is the perfect case in point. This is a hand picked top level piece from a major collector who considers this one of the better specimens he has ever handled. A large fly has been trapped forever in this water clear yellow oval of Amber from the Dominican Republic. Both sides of the "suspended" insect here are clearly visible, and the detail of the arthropod is amazing even with the naked eye.
    Overall Measurements: 2.1 x 1.2 x 0.3 inches (5.3 x 3.0 x 0.7 cm)
