    Description

    Dominican Amber with Anolis Lizard
    Oligocene
    Dominican Republic

This little piece of Amber offers a big surprise as a rare Lizard is trapped in this tiny dollop of fossilized tree resin. The Lizard is not quite complete as it appears to be missing all or part of the head likely in a testimony to how it died. Fortunately, it was preserved for all time in this perfect suspension. Amber with inclusions are not rare, but examples with vertebrates most definitely are very uncommon. This is Dominican Amber which is typically considered the best of the variety often due to the deep golden-orange coloration which this specimen certainly exhibits. The warm example has an odd, thin groove around the periphery which is the result of it having been fashioned in a wire wrap for wearing as a pendant. This is simply an incredible fossil with a rare inclusion. The transparent drop allows for ease of viewing the trapped reptile, and the high degree of clarity gives a "gemmy" look to the Amber specimen. This is a truly fascinating prehistoric diorama sure to be the most intriguing piece in any collection it may join. The GIA certified the Amber, and the fossilized Lizard were part of a research study which culminated in a joint publication involving the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University which evaluated it extensively. This is an absolutely amazing fossil of great interest. Since the creature is in the Amber, taxonomic identification with certainty would require more testing.
