Description

    DOMINICAN AMBER IN SILTSTONE
    Oligiocene
    Dominican Republic

In the Dominican Republic, amber is mined by hand digging long tunnels into hillsides, trying to locate layers of sediment that contain golden amber. Over 30 million years ago, sap fell from trees and was carried out to larger bodies of water by streams and flooding events. The sap would settle into calm waters and sedimentary basins to eventually fossilize into amber. The present specimen is a fine example of an amber-bearing layer in siltstone that was likely deposited after a major storm event on land. The amber in the siltstone has been polished to bring out the warm golden colors it's known for; it is a fine contrast to the gray-green layered siltstone. The pieces of amber measure up to 1 ½ inches long in the fine matrix measuring 7 x 3 ½ x 1 ½ inches.

    Estimate: $400 - $600.
