DescriptionCRETACEOUS AMBER FROM NEW JERSEY
Early Upper Cretaceous - Turonian-Cenomanian
Sayreville, New Jersey
Cretaceous amber was discovered in New Jersey only a few decades ago and that remarkable discovery has helped shed light on the insect fauna and flora of the early Cretaceous. The amber of New Jersey is three times older than Dominican and Baltic amber, thus allowing it to act as a time capsule for the Cretaceous. This specimen of New Jersey amber is large for the material that is usually found in the lignite pits of the Sayreville area. Possessing a butterscotch color and opaqueness, this specimen has been polished on two sides while holding its natural texture on the others. This amber specimen measures 2 ¼ x 1 ½ x 1 inch.
