Description

Burmite with Spider Inclusion
Burmite
Cretaceous
Hukawng Valley, Myitkyina District, Kachin State, Myanmar
0.67 x 0.66 x 0.27 inches (1.71 x 1.67 x 0.68 cm)

Spiders of this size are rare in any type of Amber and this particular specimen of a Mygalomorph spider is wonderfully preserved. Most "large spiders" in Amber are really just the discarded exuvium, which has become trapped in the resin by accident. Living spiders of this size were infrequently trapped because they were able to escape the resin while it was still liquid. This one is perfectly preserved, with great detail. The Mygalomorphs are active predator spiders-the group includes most of the best-known large spiders, including tarantulas. This is a fascinating specimen trapped in a 1.3 gram drop of Burmite.

Estimate: $400 - up.
