Featuring a most unique, cylindrical shape, this polished specimen of Baltic Amber from Poland is water clear and has a pleasing light yellowish coloration. Dating to the Eocene, this piece, weighing 4 grams, contains a seriously rare pairing of mating midges. Caught forever in the throes of the act of flagrante delicto, this example of fossilized tree resin has preserved, not only the ceratopogonids, but the action in this surreal prehistoric diorama. Even without magnification, the "dynamic duo" of Diptera can be seen clearly with the naked eye near the round edge of the piece. At 1 inch (2.5 cm) long, the pipe of Amber is far from little, but, of course, it is the ancient scene involving the pair of small flies frozen in time that makes it so very special.
