    Alberto Vargas (Peruvian/American, 1896-1982)
Hawaiian Beauty, Esquire study, circa 1942
    Watercolor and pencil on vellum
    30 x 20 inches (76.2 x 50.8 cm)
    Signed lower right

A well developed pin up posed by Jeanne Dean his primary model of the work he produced for Esquire Magazine. Vargas was famous for taking studies into the realm of near completed work. Studies are customarily produced to work out ideas and composition before a painting is begun. Typically studies are in pencil with minimal color or none at all. They are often discarded or stored after the painting is completed. Vargas was clearly devote to many of his studies and clearly enjoyed the creative process. Many of his studies became stand alone works of art for his own pleasure as none were meant to be seen by others once it "mid-wifed" the painting it preceded. As a special note, Vargas rarely signed his studies. Even more rare is his signing them "Varga" using a "circle G" in the signature.

A certificate of authenticity from the San Francisco Art Exchange accompanies this lot.
