    Description

    ALBERT BIERSTADT (American 1830 - 1902)
    Iceberg Study, 1883
    Oil on heavy paper
    6 x 9 inches

    PROVENANCE:
    Richard York Gallery;
    Property of a Gentleman

    A very similar study of an iceberg by Bierstadt, measuring 5-5/8 x 9 inches, is in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (reproduced in Gordon Hendricks, Albert Bierstadt, Painter of the American West, New York, 1973, no. CL-62). Like Frederic Church before him, Bierstadt made oil sketches of icebergs in the North Atlantic during his crossings. This one was painted during an 1883 trip to Europe to promote the sale of a newly patented shotgun to foreign governments.
