Yoruba (Nigeria), the Oyo area, and probably the Erin region, from the atelier of Maku or his son, Toibo
    Fine Male Figure
    Wood, pigment, beads
Height: 22 inches Width: 10 inches Depth: 7 ½ inches

This standing male figure wearing a tunic, on an integral base, holds wands in both hands, one perhaps a flywhisk, the other perhaps an Eshu dance wand. Strung glass beads adorn the figure's neck. White and yellow pigment adorns much of the figure and his wands, in spots, although the hair has been painted with indigo, and is shaped into a short tail that most probably signals this as an Eshu shrine figure. As is common in Yoruba sculpture, features are enlarged to fill the face, and there are lozenge-shaped scars on the cheeks, and projecting triangular ears. Eshu (or Eshu/Elegba) is the Yoruba deity of uncertainty, and the messenger of the gods who sends clients to diviners, where he takes a portion of every sacrifice made. The condition overall is very good, though there is a small chip off the third toe of the proper right foot and minor insect damage at the rear of the base.

Provenance: H. Bruce Greene II and family, Naples, Florida
