    Description

    Yoruba (Nigeria)
Kneeling Woman holding a bowl, with a child on her back
Wood, traces of red camwood pigment
    Height: 16 ½ inches Width: 7 3/8 inches Depth: 10 ½ inches

This group is similar in posture to the example above, although the bowl in this carving is proportionately larger, supported both by the woman's hands and by a short strut on the integral base. The child is positioned on the woman's back as in the previous example, except that here a textured baby-tie cloth is shown. The faces and arms of both mother and child have minute, richly rendered scarification marks, while the woman has a delicate, detailed two-tier crescent hairstyle. This bowl-figure was almost certainly used for holding kola nuts, presented by a host to signal peace and welcome to his guests. There is a large crack separating the proper left wrist from the hand on the bowl. An animal-gnawed loss is at the back center of the bowl, from which a crack moves down the back of the bowl.

Provenance: H. Bruce Greene II and family, Naples, Florida
