    Winiama or Nunuma (Burkina Faso)
    Plank Mask
    Wood, pigment, fiber, metal
    Height: 38 inches Width: 12 ¾ inches Depth: 7 5/8 inches

This mask, with its projecting hemispherical head, features two sets of eyes, one the "target" type, the other, open holes through which its wearer could see. The lower part of the face is eroded from long use. Above the face are two linked planks of trapezoidal shape, each with a "hawk's" beak projecting forward, then down. On top of the upper plank is a crescent shape. While the polychrome is muted from age and use in some places, there is also some overpainting; the pigmentation of its geometric patterns is black, white, and red.

The functions and uses of this mask are similar to those in the lots above.

The proper right side of the upper plank has been broken away and repaired indigenously with wire at the top and a cord tying it at the bottom. The proper right ear has been broken away and been reglued, as has the proper right edge of the face behind the ear. Along the top back edge of the face there is some loss.

Provenance: H. Bruce Greene II and family, Naples, Florida
