    Vai or Gola (Liberia)
    Helmet Mask
    Wood, pigment
    Height: 31 inches Width: 8 ½ inches Depth: 8 7/8 inches

This mask is described as follows in African Masks of the West Guinea Coast. Selections from the Thomas D. Slater Collection, (William Siegmann, ed. West Lafayette, Indiana: Robert L. Ringel Gallery, Purdue University, 2003, p.95, fig.129). "the star on this mask is a reference to the one star of the Liberian flag and identifies the mask as either Vai or Gola. The Gola claim to have originated this mask and call it Betu while the Vai and Mende both call the mask Borwu. Both terms mean 'long neck'. Men perform the masquerade, but it is thought of as a feminine spirit. During performances, the masker demonstrates acrobatic skills and performs visual tricks. It may 'give birth' to a small version of the mask that emerges from underneath its raffia costume..." There is some shipping along the lower edge and a piece at the base 2 ½ by 1 ¾ inches just proper right of center front has been reglued. There is a crack at the proper right.

    Provenance: Thomas D. Slater, Indianapolis
