    Urhobo (?) (Nigeria)
    Wood, pigment
    Height: 22 ½ inches Width: 5 ¾ inches Depth: 6 inches

Determining precise group origin for the sculptures known either as iphri (Urhobo) or ivri (Isoko) cannot be done solely on appearance, as has been pointed out by Philip M. Peek (Philip M. Peek, "The Isoko Ethos of Ivri", African Arts, vol.XX, no.1, November 1986, pp.42 ff.). In several ways - facial configuration and markings, hand-steadied smaller flanking figures, and head shape and jaws of the supporting creature - this example resembles one illustrated by Peek as "Urhobo (?)" (op. cit., p.47, fig.13). Certainly the forms convey the general human psychological characteristics to which these unusual figures give symbolic embodiment, "the qualities of ferocity and aggression ... and even violence in defense of one's own interests" (Peek, op. cit., p.47). The feet and lower body show considerable insect damage and loss, while there is some vertical cracking and pigment loss.
