    Description

    Songe (Democratic Republic of Congo)
    Kifwebe Mask
    Wood, pigment, twigs, hair
Height: 14 inches Width: 8 inches Depth: 8 ½ inches

This mask, as can be determined through its smooth head area and primarily white coloring, is female, of which there is only one for each bwadi ensemble. The color white has many benign connotations, being associated with all the positive attributes of the inner and outer being, such as goodness, health, purity, reproductive capacity, peace, wisdom, and beauty. At the level of equivalent symbolic meaning white evokes the moon, light, manioc flour, mother's milk, and sperm. The absence of the striations commonly seen on kifwebe masks allows the powerful yet subtle balance used here of block shapes and sweeping, curved planes to have the fullest impact. There are chips missing from the back top of the head, a crack to the lower center chin, a crack on the top of the head from the center edge, old insect losses at the back of the head, and minor abrasions and pigment loss.
