    Songe (Democratic Republic of Congo)
    Kifwebe Mask
    Wood, pigment, hair
    Height: 14 inches Width: 9 ¾ inches Depth: 7 ¾ inches

Connected to the bwadi bwa kifwebe society, the mask type seen here is one of the most dramatic and striking to have come out of Africa. Masks with dramatic surface striations are earliest reported in the first decade of the twentieth century, spreading rapidly during the following decade. The nature of the masks is ambivalent. "They are not entirely human, animal nor spirit and as such they defy classification within the normal order of the universe . . . each bwadi ensemble comprises one female masker, the first to be introduced upon the founding of a new group, and an unlimited number of males" (Dunja Hersak in Frank Herreman and Constantijn Petridis. Face of the Spirits. Antwerp: Martial and Snoeck, 1993, pp. 148, 150). There is overall abrasion and pigment loss, a few old vertical cracks (two at top rear), and a minor loss at the lower proper right corner.
