    Senufo (Côte d'Ivoire)
    Helmet Mask
Wood, leather, metal, plant fibers, cord, quills, feathers, pigment
    Height: 34 ½ inches Width: 20 ¾ inches Depth: 9 ½ inches

Among the Senufo "helmet mask constructions are the senior and most 'dangerous' of Poro society masquerades. They are the embodiment of supernatural power and knowledge of magical formulae, expressed through aggressive forms and symbols, including the adjunctive accumulation of signifying natural material ... (Anita J. Glaze. Art and Death in a Senufo Village. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1981, p. 208). Here the buffalo-horned helmet has an attached leather face covering along with a small, centered protective figure and quills and feathers. There is overall use wear and abrasion, as well as fiber loss.

    Provenance: John A. Buxton, Dallas
    Arthur Shone, Dayton
Arthur Barth, San Diego (Christie's New York, sale 7678, 18 May 1993, lot 69)
    Dr. Melvin Silverman, 1966
