Pende (Eastern) (Democratic Republic of Congo)
    Face Mask (Munyangi or Kindjinga)
    Wood, pigment
Height: 13 ½ inches, Width: 61/2 inches, Diameter: 4 inches

Among the several forms of Eastern Pende masks is this one with its regional variation on the heart-shaped face which is quite broad at the eyes before coming inward to a sharp point at the chin. Most have narrow almond-shaped eyes which protrude somewhat, with strongly emphasized doubly arching eyebrows. White triangles on a black ground appear on both cheeks and at some point on the varying emblem which rises above the forehead. Here this emblem is unusual in taking the form of a black and a red figure (death and life colors) standing are either side, facing away from one another, and supporting a lintel-like bar with the triangle low relief pattern. The whole has the effect of a guarded portal. The movements of the mask's dance are exceptionally rapid and rigorous, requiring a highly skilled and youthful impersonator. The dance reflects the movements of a large and showy regional bird, the great blue turaco, the feathers of which crown the head of the costumed wearer. The entire performance is one of dazzling youthful energy, done in short bursts before the dancer retires from the area.
