    Pende (Democratic Republic of Congo)
    Face Mask (Mbuya)
    Wood, pigment
    Height: 7 ¼ inches Width: 5 ¾ inches Depth: 3 3/8 inches

Mbuya is a generic name for female. "Not surprisingly, the generic woman is visualized as a young woman" (Z.S. Strother. Inventing Masks. Agency and History in the Art of the Central Pende. Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, 1998, p.217). Since masks representing the young woman appear in many different dances in various regions of Pende territory, these are given varied dance- and locale-specific names. This example captures the feminine aesthetic defined by Z.S.Stother using material from indigenous informants. Qualities meeting the Pende feminine aesthetic include slitted eyes; a smooth, relatively flat forehead; and smooth, plump cheeks. All of these qualities can be seen in the present exceptionally serene and portrait-like example. There are small insect holes in the forehead and proper right eye-cheek area and some interior abrasions and small losses along the back rim. The projections at the outside ends of both eyes have old chipping loss.
