    Kono (Côte d'Ivoire or Liberia)
    Face Mask
    Wood, metal, nail, fiber, hide
    Height: 10 ¼ inches Width: 10 ½ inches Depth: 3 ¾ inches

Although the owner credits this specific mask to the Guerze (Kpelle), it bears a striking resemblance to one published by William Siegmann as from the Kono people (William Siegmann, ed. African Masks of the West Guinea Coast, selections from the Thomas D. Slater Collection. Purdue: Robert L. Ringel Gallery, Purdue University, 2003, p.39, fig.27). There, its function is stated as "meant to frighten and intimidate opposing warriors" (Siegmann, ed., loc.cit.). This agrees with the owner's statement: "This mask is said not to dance but rather (to) follow warriors into battle. They presented to him any captives or slain enemies" (H. Bruce Greene, personal communication). Extensive insect traceries are visible over the face. There are old, indigenously repaired horn breaks: on the proper left halfway down, on the proper right nearer the head. There is other abrasion and use wear.

Provenance: H. Bruce Greene II and family, Naples, Florida
