    Kissi (Guinea)
    Pair of Rice masks
    Wood, pigment, fiber
    Male: Height: 15 ½ inches Width: 6 ½ inches Depth: 5 ½ inches
    Female: Height: 12 ½ inches Width: 6 1/8 inches Depth: 4 3/8 inches

The exact makers of this most unusual pair of masks are uncertain. It has been suggested that they may have originated among the Kono, a small group living immediately west of the Kissi, whom the masks could have reached through trade or intermarriage. It is of interest to quote what H. Bruce Greene has to say about them, relaying information from the person by whom he was given the masks in thanks for charitable acts Greene had performed for that person. "This pair of masks from the Kissi are the only ones known...These masks reputedly were kept in bags of rice in the rice house, and danced with at the time of planting and harvest. If the harvest was poor, they were beaten with switches made of rice straw; however, if the harvest was successful, they were covered with rice flour" (personal communication, 2006).

Provenance: H. Bruce Green II and family, Naples, Florida
