Idoma (?) or Igbo (?) (Nigeria)
    Zoomorphic Horizontal Headdress
    Wood, pigment, cloth, metal
Height: 10 inchec Length: 22 inches

While some sources have indicated a possible Idoma origin for this composite, animal-derived headdress, the closest published similar example is given to the northern Igbo in the Awka area, not too distant neighbors of the Idoma (Marcilene K. Wittmer and William Arnett. Three Rivers of Nigeria. Atlanta: The High Museum of Art, 1978, pp. 32-33, no. 68). An interesting, more distant resemblance, and one far deeper in time, is to several metal masks of skeletal carnivore skulls from the Lower Niger (see Martha G. Anderson and Philip M. Peek, eds. Ways of the Rivers: Arts and Environment of the Niger Delta. Los Angeles: UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, 2002: pp. 44-45, figs. 1.11 and 1.13; p. 51, figs. 1.22 and 1.23; and p. 52, fig. 1.24). In the present example the lower jaw is articulated, a characteristic of several masking complexes in the Niger Cross River area. There is some loosening of joints and component parts, along with age wear.

    Provenance: Thomas D. Slater, Indianapolis
