    Galwa (Gabon)
    Mask (Okukwe)
    Wood, pigment
Height: 12 inches Width: 7 ¾ inches Depth: 5 inches

This kind of mask, connected with the judicial Okukwe society of the areas along the Ogowe River downstream form Lambarene, is primarily in the domain of men. At the center of village life, the masks sanction such events as mourning important people, birth of twins, and initiation. "The visit of the mask to the village was always an event if not dramatic then at least socially imposing in the sense that the masked man, an Okukwe initiate, knew all the village rumors and disclosed them publicly to the great embarrassment of the interested parties who hurried to carry him offerings." (Louis Perrois. Ancestral Art of Gabon from the Collections of the Barbier-Mueller Museum. Dallas: Dallas Museum of Art, 1986, p.100). In addition to abrasion and layered paint loss on the front, there is a top center rear segment missing with a crack expending to the proper left from the loss area. There is old wear and abrasion on the rear.
