    Description

    Dogon (Mali)
    Equestrian Ring
    Copper alloy
    Height: 2 3/4 in. Width: 1 1/8 in. Depth: 1 3/4 in.

A finger ring featuring a miniature mounted equestrian with two additional figures, one behind, the other in front of the horse. The ring itself is a heavy casting with the scene placed on an integrally cast rectangular base. The mounted person wears a conical hat and holds the horse's reins. To his right front a standing figure, also with a hat, holds the horse's bridle. The smaller figure at the rear also seems to be attending and touching the horse.
Rings such as this often depict the hogon, an important, wealthy, and high level priest, and they were often but not always owned by hogons. Horses were expensive in Dogon country, of course, and persons who owned and rode them were wealthy and of very high status, though some riders may depict cavalry from invading peoples or other strangers.

    Provenance: Thomas D. Slater, Indianapolis
