    Dan (Liberia/Côte d'Ivoire)
    Face Mask
Wood, pigment, human hair, fiber, cloth, cowry shells, aluminum, iron
Height of wood mask: 9 ½ inches Width at ears: 7 ¾ inches Depth: 5 inches

The facial characteristics of this strong mask most resemble those of deangle, the masquerade of the circumcision camp. Interestingly, a deangle mask also sporting a beard of human hair and a framing roll still retaining all its cowry shells is illustrated as fig.17 on page 20 of Eberhard Fischer and Hans Himmelheber, The Art of the Dan in West Africa. (Zürich: Rietberg Museum, 1984). In the present example, most of the cowries are gone and the cloth is fragile, but the mask is overall in good condition.

    Provenance: Sotheby's Paris, Sale 3015, lot 91
