    Dan (Liberia/Côte d'Ivoire)
    Face Mask (Gunyege)
    Wood, nails
    Height: 8 ½ inches Width: 4 ½ inches

"This character, whose name means 'masquerade belonging to the house', is only found among the Northern Dan. As the name suggests, these masquerades are not considered to be blüga, masks of the forest. They are understood to be the manifestations of benevolent spirits residing in the home, rather than in the bush." (Eberhard Fischer and Hans Himmelheber. The Art of the Dan in West Africa. Zürich: Rietberg Museum, 1984, p.35). These masks act outside any organizational controls, each governed solely by its owning family. "In the region of Man, many villages hold foot-races for young men every week of the dry season. On such occasions, the defending champion from the previous week has the right to wear the gunyege masquerade" (Fischer and Himmelheber, loc. cit.). There are minor surface scratches and very slight losses around the eyes, along with small areas of abrasion.

Provenance: William Jamieson Tribal Art, Toronto
