    Bobo (Burkina Faso)
    Nweka Mask
    Wood, pigment
    Height: 54 ½ inches Width: 15 inches

This tall vertical mask has a long head, and above it, a transverse openwork plank of abstract shape featuring hooks and tabs, two diamond-shaped holes, and four of triangular shape. The very long notched nose bisects the face vertically, extending from the chin and over the forehead. The overall pigmentation is rust red, with some traces of blue.

Masks of this type were made, owned and danced by Bobo blacksmiths. Sacred, they incarnated the spirit of Dwo, the son of the creator-god, Duro, and danced at funerals and annual festivals.

There is considerable old loss of wood on the bottom of the face, a crack on the proper left side of the head with old repairs, and some paint loss.
