    Description

    Baule (Côte d'Ivoire)
    Female Figure
    Wood, patination
Height: 14 inches Width: 3 inches Depth: 3 5/8 inches

As Susan Vogel's fieldwork proved, Baule female figures were intended to serve one of two kinds of familiar spirits. The most common use was as a spirit spouse, the mate that everyone had in the other world before birth into this world. A female figure would be a man's spirit wife (blolo bla), while a woman's spirit husband was a male figure. This spouse then becomes the center of a shrine where the spirit partner can be appeased appropriately. Another, less common figural sculpture need is to placate one or another nature spirit (asie usu). Vogel's Baule informants all agreed that seeing a sculpture out of its owner-developed context, it was impossible from the isolated image to determine its purpose.
There are cracks in the torso, the only easily visible one being at the proper left of the navel. There is a crack through the proper right big toe on the base. Otherwise, the condition is very good.
