    Asante (Ghana)
    Royal Chair, asipim
    Wood, copper alloy, animal skin
    Height: 28 inches Width: 17 inches Depth:Seat: 15 ½ inches

Modeled on a European prototype, this chair has stretched animal skin on the seat and on the slightly inclined back, while the wood is studded overall with hundreds of small round brass upholstery tacks, and with larger conical ferrules spaced at approximately four inch intervals throughout. On the top of the back is a low relief of embossed abstract designs, especially endless knot patterns, and representational designs, particularly of crossed crocodiles above, with a row of five crocodiles below, all of sheet copper alloy. The chair legs are square in section and on one side, at the top of the backrest, appears a cast brass finial with a wheel-like motif beneath a pointed top. The right finial was lost several years ago during a public exhibition of the chair. A split in the leather seat runs 2 ½ inches long at the back just left of center. Also, there is a split 1 ¼ inches long on the right side of the leather seat.

Provenance: H. Bruce Greene II and family, Naples, Florida
