    Description

    Africa: Democratic Republic of Congo
    Topoke
    Shield
    Leather, basketry, wood
    Height: 38 ½ inches Width: 16 ¼ inches Depth: 7 inches

According to Purissima Benitez-Johannot, Topoke shields were most frequently used in battles resulting from non-payment of debts incurred in the large regional markets. Iron javelins were the primarily currency, but many transactions were on credit terms. These javelins became the weapons, along with knives, against which the shields were intended as protection. "The Topoke's long tradition of market gatherings and the sporadic eruption of wars led to the distant dispersion of their shields and iron javelin currency" (P. Benitez-Johannot in P. Benitez-Johannot and Jean Paul Barbier. Shields. Africa, Southeast Asia and Oceania, from the Collections of the Barbier-Mueller Museum. Munich, London, New York: Prestel, 2000, p.70).
There is a small hole near the top and some stains and abrasions.

    Provenance: Gary Hendershott, Little Rock
