    PROVENANCE:

Adrien Holy, a versatile painter of figures, landscapes, and still lifes, was the son of the artist Jules Holy. He received his initial artistic training in Bern, Switzerland, from 1915 to 1916 and furthered his education at the École des Beaux-Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds and in Geneva. He traveled extensively in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, and Norway but lived and worked in Paris during the formative years of his career from 1920 to 1939 with his wife, the artist Ellisif Björset. The present work is an outstanding example of his figurative painting from his early maturity.

Between 1922 and 1958, his works were represented in numerous exhibitions in Switzerland and France, including Salon des Indépendants, Paris, 1922-39; Salon d'Automne de Paris, 1922-1939; Gallery Chéron 1928; Gallery Blomquist, Oslo, 1931; Gallery Marseille, Paris, 1936; Musée de l'Athenée, Geneva, 1940, 1947, and 1958; Musée de St. Imier 1942 and 1948; Gallery Beaux-Arts, Zurich, 1943; Galerie du Capitole, Lausanne, 1944 and 1949; Gallery Wolfsberg, Zurich, 1946, 1949, 1952, 1955, and 1957; Gallery Véandre, Payerne, 1949 and 1953; Gallery Motte, Geneva, 1950 and 1953; and Galerie La Vieille Fontaine, Lausanne, 1951, among others.

His works are represented in the permanent collections of many European museums including the Jeu de Paume and Musée du Petit Palais in Paris, in Neuchâtel, Glaris, Luzern, Bern, St. Imier, Aarau, St. Gallen, Geneva, Rohrschach, Thoune, Lausanne, Straßburg, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, in the Zurich Art Society, and the Foundation Oskar Reinhart in Winterthur.
