Hermann Ratzersdorfer, Vienna, Austria, circa 1880
    Marks: (conjoined HR), (3-dog's head-A)
    8-3/4 inches high x 8-1/2 inches wide x 4-3/4 inches deep (22.2 x 21.6 x 12.1 cm)

The Mannerist style vessel with rock crystal nautilus shell form bowl carved with ships at the rim over aquatic life and waves, with winged mask at the lip, supported by a cast silver satyr holding dolphins under each arm which form supports for the bowl, with partial gilt and enamel decoration, atop a carved domed rock crystal base with scrolled and landscape decoration and enameled silver rim.

Made in the workshops of Hermann Ratzersdorfer, this extravagant vessel incorporates design elements drawn from virtuoso workshops of the Mannerist period. The rock crystal bowl is based on designs produced at the Miseroni and Saracchi workshops of Milan dating to the middle of the 16th century, while the cast satyr figure is based on a print by Cornelis Floris.
