The Banko Ware match safe with applied Japanese inspired silver stork taking flight from floral motif surrounded by iron body, hinged lid, match strike to bottom.

In 1883 Gorham introduced a new line of pieces produced in iron and silver under the name Banko (iron) Ware. Three different patterns of match safes were produced in Banko Ware, with cast silver plaques mounted to the interior of the iron body which created the illusion of the body being peeled away to reveal the scene. Due to the difficulty of combining these materials, however, production of this new type of ware was short lived, with the known examples invariably bearing the date letter for 1883.
