PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN

The wine cooler with flared cast base with strapwork design, body with cylindrical flared neck upon bulbous base seamed along vertical line at junction with mermaid visible to interior, mermaid supporting double dolphin handle, winged cartouche to either side bearing French coat-of-arms for Louis-Henri de Bourbon, the Prime Minster under Louis XV.

This design was inspired by a 1748 engraving by Juste Aurele Meissonnier, illustrated on plate 58 in the Oeuvre de Juste-Aurele Meissonnier. Identical examples to the present lot are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum.

Condition Report*: The cooler presents well with some wear to upper edge of shoulder with slight unevenness at join to neck and foot, and with fine surface scratches commensurate with age, use and polishing.
