    A CLASSIC NAVAJO MAN'S WEARING BLANKET
    c. 1860 -1865
    tightly woven of native handspun churro wool in natural ivory and brown, indigo-dyed blue, and raveled bayeta in cochineal-dyed red, with a Second Phase Chief's pattern, composed of pairs of narrow linear bars overlaying three striped panels, all against a classic banded ground

    Provenance:
    Gifted to Dr. Robert Morris Bertolet, M.D. (1846 - 1882), as payment for his services as a surgeon in the USA Medical Corps (N.M. Territory). Upon Dr. Bertolet's death, this textile was transferred to his brother, Alfred Spang Bertolet, who gifted it to the current owner's grandparents in 1947.

    This lot is accompanied by a copy of the red dye test results.

    Dimensions: 74 x 49 ½ inches





    Condition Report*: In overall excellent condition.  With recent restoration over six areas -- five small areas along the edges and one 30" long area in the interior of one of the brown bands.  Recently cleaned, but with mordant stains remaining.  Selvedge intact.  Corner ties with some loss.
